Rosie Lockhart, meanwhile, is luminous through Maggie's ill-fated romance and the scandal that ensues. Zahra Newman takes over as a young woman torn between self-possession and self-doubt, passion and renunciation. As with other performers playing children, her age is suggested to the imagination rather than delivered through the shorthand of caricature. The central role is split between three performers, and gathers the force of all three by the end. Physical theatre is deployed with gravity and restraint, and divine a cappella singing haunts the action. Exposition is so crisp that those unfamiliar with the story can follow it without effort. Characters are portrayed with economy and nuance. The provincial English accents are spot on. Tanya Gerstle directs a remarkable ensemble cast to perfection.
